What is Rioja wine?
Rioja is a DOCa wine region in northern Spain, centred on the Ebro River valley and divided into three zones: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental. The dominant grape is Tempranillo, typically blended with Garnacha, Graciano or Mazuelo depending on the producer and style.
Rioja is best known for its aged reds — wines with structure, soft tannins and a characteristic balance of red fruit, vanilla and spice that comes from time in American or French oak barrels. The region also produces white wines, mainly from Viura, and a small amount of rosé.
Rioja ageing categories — which one to choose
All Rioja red wines fall into one of four categories based on minimum ageing time. Understanding them makes buying much easier.
- Joven: little or no oak ageing, released young. Fresh, fruit-forward and easy to drink. Good everyday choice.
- Crianza: minimum two years ageing, at least one in oak barrel. Approachable, with some structure and spice. The most popular style.
- Reserva: minimum three years ageing, at least one in oak. More complex, with dried fruit, leather and tobacco notes. Best with food.
- Gran Reserva: minimum five years ageing, at least two in oak. Only produced in exceptional vintages. Concentrated, long-lived wines built for the cellar.
If you are buying as a gift or for a special occasion, go for Reserva or Gran Reserva. For everyday drinking, Crianza is the reliable middle ground.
Rioja wine and food pairing
Rioja red pairs naturally with roast lamb — the classic combination in the region itself. It also works well with grilled meats, slow-cooked stews, aged cheeses like Manchego and Idiazabal, mushroom dishes and tapas boards.
White Rioja, especially barrel-aged Viura, is a good match for grilled fish, seafood rice and dishes with cream or butter sauces.
Key producers in this selection
The range at Vinissimus covers both accessible everyday bottles and some of Rioja's most respected names:
- Muga: one of Rioja Alta's benchmark producers, known for elegant, structured wines aged in their own cooperage.
- La Rioja Alta: traditional bodega producing some of the longest-lived wines in the region, including Gran Reserva 904.
- CVNE (Cune): founded in 1879, reliable across all price points from everyday Crianza to the iconic Imperial Reserva.
- El Coto: widely available in the UK and a consistent entry point into Rioja with good value across the range.
- Marqués de Riscal: one of the oldest bodegas in Rioja, with a strong presence across the ageing tiers.
- White Rioja
White Rioja does not get the attention it deserves. Made primarily from Viura — with occasional blends of Malvasía or Garnacha Blanca — it ranges from fresh and unoaked to barrel-fermented styles with real texture and ageing potential. If you have only ever drunk red Rioja, a good white Reserva is worth trying.
