The Rioja Alavesa, on the northern edge of the Rioja DOCa, is a region of rough terrain and rather high altitude with poor soils of a chalky-clay composition. Here the vines need more distance between them in order to find essential nutrients, and the outcome of this effort is reflected in wines with body and good acidity, approachable in their youth but also capable of ageing gracefully.

The Baigorri Crianza is a magnificent example of the area's modern reds. It's a versatile and complex red which will please the majority of consumers. Vintage after vintage, this Rioja Alavesa wine offers us a safe bet, one of those names worth remembering whenever we need to make a good impression in any situation and at any time. It has that lovely garnet colour with a ruby rim typical of wines combining character and freshness. It smells of oak, red fruits, crisp pomegranate, eucalyptus, white pepper and scrubland bushes. On the palate, it's fresh as well as full. Agreeable tannins are working their way right round the inside of the mouth, whilst the acidity of the woodland fruit is carried vertically. Mineral notes emerge, shy aromas of coffee, hints of dried fruit and recently shelled, toasted nuts. To some extent leaving behind it a creamy hint, elegantly herbaceous and very fresh. It doesn't require decanting, but takes it with no trouble. It grows with every sip, and every moment.

A final piece of advice, if you ever find yourself near the Sierra de Cantabria, don't let the opportunity of visiting the stunning, modern Bodega Baigorri pass you by.

Great value for money

Perfect wine for day-to-day enjoyment. You will struggle finding similar quality/price in other European countries.

A DOC rioja which delivered exactly as expected.

A DOC rioja which delivered exactly as expected. Aromas and visually this is exactly what you expect from a rioja. Subtle aromas, deep cherry colour and clings to the glass in big fat waves. Strong taste of cherry and oak with a black fruit aftertaste. Medium to bold, above average tannins and medium acidity which lingered on the tongue after each sip. At under £13 for the bottle this is a good value rioja that won't disappoint.

Wine from Bodegas Baigorri

Bodegas Baigorri

The magnificent building of Bodegas Baigorri in Samaniego, at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria mountains, was designed by the Guipuzcoa architect Iñaki Aspiazu, with the intention of integrating it harmoniously into the countryside. To the passer-by, only a huge glass cube can be seen among an extensive carpet of vineyards; however, all of the industrious action in the winery takes place below, in its seven underground storeys descending to a depth of 32 metres. Since its ...
