The wine

La Mateo Vendimia comes from Bodegas D. Mateos in Aldeanueva de Ebro, in the Rioja Oriental. The family has been growing grapes there since 1886, when they started with a small vineyard at the foot of Monte Yerga.
The wine is part of the Colección de Familia, the estate’s most personal range. These wines are produced in limited quantities and are only released onto the market when the vintage meets the family’s quality standards.
The blend consists of 70 per cent Tempranillo, 27 per cent Garnacha and 3 per cent Graciano. The grapes come from vines over 50 years old in the El Salobral plot, the estate’s most important vineyard.

What does this wine taste like?

In the glass, the wine displays a ruby red colour with great depth.
The nose is intense and fruit-driven. Ripe fruits such as redcurrant, strawberry, blackberry and plum dominate. These are complemented by spicy notes and toasty aromas from the barrel ageing.
On the palate, the wine is well-balanced, full-bodied and creamy. Balsamic notes lend it additional depth. The finish is long and pleasant.

Drinking and storing

The 2023 vintage is now available and has ageing potential for the next five to seven years. As this is an unfiltered wine, sediment may form over time. Serve at 17 °C. We recommend decanting the wine beforehand. This allows the aromas to be released and ensures that any sediment remains in the decanter.

Food pairing

La Mateo Vendimia pairs well with barbecued meat, red meat and game. It is also a good choice for hearty stews.
It also goes well with mature cheeses and cooked sausages. Its fruitiness and creamy texture balance out spicy and savoury flavours.

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested by hand into small crates and destemmed at the winery. Before fermentation, they undergo cold maceration for four days. This allows more fruit and colour to be extracted into the wine.
Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with the cap being punched down daily. The wine is then aged for 14 months in new French and American oak barrels. It is bottled unfiltered.
