La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 9042011
Other bottle sizes and vintages
£45.06/ 0.75 L btl
In 1904, Don Alfredo Ardanza, one of the founders of the initial enterprise and owner of Bodegas Ardanza, proposed the union of both companies. To celebrate this, a very special wine was launched onto the market which was called Reserva 1904 then, but it would become the precursor of the current Gran Reserva 904, probably the winery's best.
A wine with an excellent quality-price ratio, a Tempranillo and Graciano coupage, with four years of ageing in American oak. A wine of great balance, very seductive, another great classic only produced in the best vintage years.

Hard to imagine a wine costing over £30 beinga bargain, but this is a really fine wine. Its unique too. Okay its got what you expect in terms of intensity and length of finish from a fine wine, but there is something about the spice present both on the nose snd in the taste that is unusual and unexpected. How can a wine be a bit reminiscent of eucalyptus? Maybe that's a poor analegy but there is definitely something unusual and while I like it very much indeed I would guess not every person would necessarily be as keen as me. So in summary a truly high class rioja with depth of flavour and length of finish you could pay a deal more for getting. It has a bouquet and taste that is unusual but in my view beautiful.by: Mats (29/12/2016) - Vintage 2005
If you like a traditional Rioja with a modern twist this is great quality at a reasonable price. Subtle berries, vanilla and oak with a little more body than the older riojas. Lovely and one of the best in this price range!by: Marky (14/02/2019) - Vintage 2009
A great red wine
Stong oaky background with bouquet of eucalyptus, tobacco and dark red fruit. The essence of tempranillo and an absolute classic. Intensity, flavour, length of finish - make for a superb glass full. A great red wine.by: Andre H. Hofman (15 Jan) - Vintage 2011
This is a great wine from a great Rioja wine year. Its balance in taste, ellagance and medium body is perfect. Only its price is keeping me away from drinking this every week...!by: Arno (03/02/2017) - Vintage 2005
In my opinion the best Rioja by far. It is difficult with this wine to leave them in my cellar. Already great to drink now. But surely improving even further in years to come.

La Rioja Alta
La Rioja Alta is one of Rioja's historic wineries, creator of such emblematic brands as Viña Ardanza, Viña Arana, Viña Alberdi, Gran Reserva 890 and Gran Reserva 940. All of their wines are excellent and clearly exemplify what it means to be a great Rioja classic these days, in present times. Their wines are elegant, complex and sophisticated like those of the past, but with more body, colour and robustness, wines adapted to the gastronomical demands of today. In short, great...
