The wine

Vinosìa Primitivo Orus 2024 is a Primitivo di Manduria-style red from Salento, in Italy's Puglia region, made by Vinosìa — a winery founded by Luciano Ercolino in nearby Irpinia, which ventured south into Puglia specifically to work with this grape. At £15.80, it's built for genuine everyday drinking, and it's built up a strong following on the strength of that: 4.6/5 from 33 reviews, with several customers saying they first tried it at a restaurant and now buy it by the case because it's better value at home.

What does this wine taste like?

Ruby red with black glints, the nose carries dark cherry (amarena) and red berry fruit alongside a touch of liquorice. On the palate, it's enveloping and velvety, with real concentration and a harmonious, elegant finish — full-bodied without feeling heavy, which is very much the character Primitivo is known for.

Drinking and storing

Serve between 16°C and 18°C — take it out of the fridge if it's been chilled, and let it breathe for a few minutes before pouring. This is a wine for drinking now rather than cellaring; reviewers note it's a reliable everyday red rather than one to lay down.

Serve between 16ºC and 18ºC

Food pairing

It's a natural with game meats, where its concentration and dark fruit can stand up to richer, gamier flavours, and with pasta in a bolognese-style ragù, where its structure matches the sauce. Cured, mature cheeses are another good match — the wine's velvety body holds its own against saltier, more intense flavours.

The search for emotional wines and total respect for the environment are combined in Luciano Ercolino's wine project and his beautiful Avellino winery in Paternopoli. Irpinia, which is the best performaing wine region in Campania year after year, hosts Vinosìa, a winery partially excavated in the hill on which it is perched, with its focus on low environmental impact and energy saving. The protection of historic vineyards in the area is another of the winery's vocations. In...
