Review

Made from grapes grown in the winery's own vineyards at Mendavia (Rioja Baja).

The wine is an attractive ruby-red colour and of medium to high density in appearance. The nose displays a toasty, fruit aroma with traces of coconut and toffee, and shows moderate intensity. Powerful, balanced and spicy on the palate, it has notes of ripe fruit and a lengthy finish.

Matured for 20 months in new American oak barrels and subsequently for 24 months in bottle.

Food pairing

Great wine at this price point

I am already a big fan of this wine but did not like paying UK supermarket prices. Ordering from Vinissimus was really easy, delivery was speedy, and I've never seen such high quality packaging before. I'm saving about 5.00 GBP per bottle, so that makes the wine taste even better.

Smooth and easy to drink

I very much enjoyed this smooth and warm Reserva. It has a pleasant nose and the soft, smooth mouth feel lingers. I enjoyed with with cured meats and hard cheese although I also feel it would be fine on its own. The price is very good so all in all I would buy it again.

Delicious and great value!

Very easy drinking Rioja which ticks all the boxes in terms of flavour and character! Struggle to find a better value wine at this level.

Great vintage

Compared to 2014 this 2015 Reserva is on the next level. More refined, complex and balanced. Extremely good price / quality ratio.

Wine from Barón de Ley

Barón de Ley

The Barón de Ley winery is located in an old monastery in the town of Mendavia, in the Navarre area of the DOCa Rioja appellation. Founded in 1985 and inspired by the Médoc châteaux in France, its Reserva and Gran Reserva wines were quickly rated among the best wines for long-term ageing. One of the few Spanish wineries listed on the stock exchange, it is now a business group bringing together names such as El C...
