Review:

The almirez is a small metal mortar which has been used by countless civilisations for blending delicious aromatic spices to enhance the flavours in our foods. In a distinctly similar way in the vineyard, with experience acquired over five generations and considerable local knowledge, Marcos Eguren has likewise brought together in this wine the different expressions of four of Toro's best vineyards: Valdefinjas, Toro, Peleagonzalo and El Palo.

This is Almirez: a lovely combination of elegance and powerfulness, of fruit cloaked in freshness, a balanced expression of Toro as only the Egurens know how to achieve. Almirez, a splendid first step towards discovering the potential of Toro wines.

Winery's evaluation of the vintage:

The autumn of 2017 was warm and dry. The weather started to cool off at the end of November, and January saw light rainfall and below-average temperatures. February and March were very rainy months; February was also a particularly cold month, while March was cool. April originally brought mild temperatures but they dropped drastically as low as -5ºC mid-month, bringing a halt to the crying or bleeding of the vines' cuts. Budding started at the end of April. Although the start of May was also cold, it did not damage the shoots. The second half of the month gave abundant rainfall and cool temperatures. June started out with a moderate increase in temperatures and unusual rainfall patterns, and flowers began to bloom mid-month. Temperatures shot up to 35ºC at the end of the month and the rain kept coming. July was a warm month too, leading to a good ripening period which finished midway through the dry month of August. The harvest collected fewer bunches of grapes than in other years, but the grapes were bigger and had an excellent level of ripeness which produced exceptionally balanced wines with good structure, a wonderful colour, and ripe tannins.

Toro, Spain

The Eguren family, originally from La Rioja, discovered Toro and has stayed with it, persuaded by the land’s potential and by the Tinta de Toro, a grape with great structure, able to convey the minerality of the soils but with a strong character that needs understanding and “taming”.
