The wine

There are few wines with the honesty and expressiveness of the young mencía de Luna Beberide and, even less, if we consider its price. It is a monovarietal made from the south-facing slopes that the winery has in Villafranca del Bierzo and Cacabelos. There, at 700 meters above sea level, the strains take root on clay-calcareous soils, which give the wine body and elegance. Only the must of the best grapes ferments in stainless steel tanks to become a young wine with a clear desire to be something else. It boasts a bright raspberry color and an unusual complexity in wines without aging. It is able to transmit the minerality of the soil and evolve elegantly for a couple of years, although it can also be drunk right after bottling. Memories of wild strawberries dominate the passage by mouth, with precise wild acidity speeding up a sweet, tasty and slightly spicy step. Its fine tannins melt on the palate covering the cheeks of a silky touch that lasts several minutes after the last sip. It is juicy, fresh and vibrant, with aromas and flavors of great sharpness, alcohol content and a very direct message: that of fruit and terroir.

Only one of the pioneer wineries of the denomination, driving the resurgence of Bercian wines, is able to interpret the Mencía grape with such transparency and obtain such a high level of expression. Old vines, viticulture without herbicides or pesticides and maximum respect for the juice of the grapes are the keys that guarantee the typicity and the unquestionable quality in each of the bottles of Luna Beberide Mencía.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

The young unoaked red 2022 Mencía is juicy and fruit-driven with floral and herbal notes, good ripeness, 13% alcohol, very fine tannins and a soft mouthfeel. It fermented in stainless steel vats with indigenous yeasts, where it matured until bottling. 90,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2023.

Vineyards

The three reds made by Luna Beberide come from vineyards in a particular location, the paraje de Valdetruchas, in Villafranca del Bierzo. The youngest vines, situated in the valley, are grown for making the young Mencía; those at medium altitude, around 500-600 metres, aged more than 60 years old, are used to produce Finca Luna Beberide (previously called Finca La Cuesta for this reason); and those planted at the top of the slope, at about 700-800 metres, are destined for Art, the most concentrated and mineral wine.

Bodegas y Viñedos Luna Beberide

Bodegas y Viñedos Luna Beberide started up in 1986, in Bierzo, under the guidance of Alejandro Luna, with the purpose of making and offering fine wines with all due respect for the land and the vines. As Alejandro maintains: "the prime material and the soil must be the mainstays of what later will be a great wine”; and thanks specifically to those slate and clay-calcareous soils, they obtain fruit-laden, mineral wines. The winery possesses a large16th Century house located...
