The wine

For a small outlay, Valtravieso Finca Santa María gives us the opportunity to enjoy a Ribera of quality, a direct and very drinkable one. The winery’s objective isn’t concentration nor making ageing aromas more powerful, in fact it’s the exact opposite: they’re looking for the balance, finesse, and freshness of fruit emanating from high altitude vines harvested early. Pour yourself a glass and see.

What does this wine taste like?

It displays a wonderful ruby-red colour in the glass with violet glints. Aromas of red fruits of the forest and floral notes of violets delight the nose, followed by a pleasant mouthfeel and a splendid texture and body accompanied by well-integrated tannins. Finca Santa María is a flavoursome wine with spicy retronasal aromas of ripe fruit blending in with soothing herbal tones and a fine toasted hint of wood.

Winemaking

The winery's aim is to create a fresh and fruity style of wine expressing the typicity of Ribera del Duero, with a short (only 6 months) time spent in used wooden barrels to round off the spirit and force of the area's grapes. Barrels are mainly pre-used French and American oak with only a small amount of new wood used. After ageing, the wine is refined in the bottle for at least two months before reaching the market.

Valtravieso Finca Santa Maria is produced in Ribera del Duero mostly from Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) grapes, sometimes accompanied by small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot depending on the year. The Finca Santa María estate the wine is named after is located at an altitude of 850 metres. Grapes from here are combined with fruit from other trusted winegrowers in different villages in the area around Valladolid and Burgos, to bring together a variety of soil types ranging from clay to chalk.

The average age of the vines is 15 years old. Tinto Fino vines are trellis or bush-trained whereas the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes grow on trellis-trained vines. The Merlot and Tinto Fino grapes are usually harvested at the beginning of October but the Cabernet fruit is normally left another couple of weeks.

Bodegas y Viñedos Valtravieso

Bodegas y Viñedos Valtravieso

Valtravieso started up in 1985 on an estate called La Revilla, located in the Valladolid town of Pinel de Arriba, right in the heart of the Ribera del Duero. It was here that the first experimental grapevines were planted and the first vintage to be put on the market was the 1994, which was their Crianza. However, it wasn't until the González Beteré family acquired the property in 2002 that Valtravieso's wines really got underway. The Valtravieso philosophy is based on the...
