The Pago de los Capellanes Crianza is a wine which hardly needs an introduction. It's one of the great mainstays of this Pedrosa de Duero winery, a red that in spite of sharing the stage with the house's other four red wines, has succeeded in making a name for itself thanks to its huge personality.

As usual at Pago de los Capellanes, it's made solely from grapes of the Tempranillo variety, grown on calcareous-clay soils, and just like its sibling wines it has the elegance and structure that now seem inseparable and constant at the Rodero-Villa winery. The harvesting of its grapes normally commences in October and the must starts to ferment shortly afterwards, by means of native yeasts. Once fermentation is complete, the wine is moved over into 300-litre French oak barrels in which it will round off harmoniously for twelve months before being bottled.

Behind the cork of each bottle lies a wine that's an intense Picota cherry colour with violet hues on the rim. On the nose it's refined and honest, and the apparent battle between the primary aromas of the fruit (plums and blackberries) and those derived from ageing (spices and toasty notes) is satisfactorily settled to the benefit of both sides; such is its balance and complexity. Spices like vanilla and pepper give way to woodland berries and liquorice, inevitably providing us with an impressive first sip. On the palate it's delicate and firm at the same time, creamy and balsamic, with fine yet lively tannins that mean immediate enjoyment or else allow cellaring for a good length of time. It's finish encapsulates the pure essence of the Ribera del Duero: long, balanced and addictive.

Color rojo picota en capa fina.

Boca fresca y equilibrada, sedoso y potente, taninos muy pulidos, y un largo final lleno de sabores y sensaciones.

The best crianza from Ribera de duero

In my view this bodega never fails to deliver. Pago de los Capellanes is simply one of the best wine producers in Spain. This crianza is a magnificant wine!

Pago de los Capellanes

Right in the heart of the Ribera del Duero, and on lands that once belonged to a chaplaincy back in the 13th to 14th Centuries, the married partnership of Rodero-Villa and their team put much effort into presenting a range of high quality wines, the fruit of “tranquillity, care and patience”.
