The wine

Grégory Pérez produces this monovarietal from dispersed strains of Godello located between the strains of Mencía and other varieties present in the vineyards of Espanillo. The average age of the strains is 60 years. Due to the different areas of vineyards, the soils are very varied. The low ground soils are mainly clay. In the highlands, slate floors predominate. Cultivated by animal traction and following the ecological premises, harvested manually.

The wine ferments in semi-new French oak barrels of 500 liters. After 48 months in the barrel, the wine is bottled with a slight clarification and filtering. Subsequently, it rests 1 year in bottle until its commercialization.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

The new creamy white 2014 Grande Cuvée is pure Godello from individual vines intermixed in the 70+-year-old vineyards in the village of Espanillo on decomposed slate soils. This is definitely more Burgundian and designed for the long haul, as it had a long élevage of four years in barrel. It fermented in a 600-liter oak barrel after 48 hours of skin contact, trying to see where the limits for Godello are. It's smoky and spicy on the nose, and the palate is even spicier, with pungent flavors, saline and very long and tasty. This should go a long way in bottle. There are only 600 bottles of this. It was bottled in November 2019. Impressive! This is sold without DO.

Bodegas y Viñedos Mengoba

Mengoba is the winery personally run by Gregory Pérez, a real enthusiast within his profession, and today a benchmark in the Bierzo region. Starting out in 1998 at the Château Cos d'Estounel, Gregory learnt the practical art of pruning and wine-growing at the hands of Guy Mallet. In Spain, he formed part of the team at Luna Beberide and was one of the creators of Paixar, one of Bierzo’s best wines. The vineyards of Bodegas Mengoba extend over Espanillo,...
