The wine

Flor de Vetus is a Toro with a powerful structure, a wine that always delivers the fruit up front, letting a wide array of notes come through from oak ageing (chocolate, toffee), always as subtle nuances and resulting from careful handling of the wood, and also floral hints with their gentle perfume, plus a touch of minerality. It is a modern style wine, lovely and pleasant, and one that can be enjoyed immediately.

What does this wine taste like?

Along the lines of both this bodega’s other wines and those of the rest of the group, the Flor de Vetus offers an excellent extraction and depth of fruit, intense and full-bodied, with good structure and balance, of medium complexity, oily (which is immediately obvious due to its abundant tears), sweet, juicy and with tannins evident but not dominant.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker and Jancis Robinson

The organic entry-level 2018 Flor de Vetus is Tinta de Toro from vines around the winery next to VIllabuena del Puente planted in 1999 and certified organic in 2018. It fermented in stainless steel and matured in oak barrels for 11 months. It has contained ripeness and moderate alcohol and acidity, reflecting a cooler year with a long and slow ripening of the grapes. It's sleek, polished and very balanced, with unusual elegance for the region. 124,027 bottles and 100 magnums produced. It was bottled in May 2020.

Tinta de Toro planted in clay soils yielding 4,000 kg/ha. Punching down during fermentation and nine months' ageing in French and American oak. It has a characterful nose, not refined but full of ripe black fruit, prunes and cinnamon. It is broad and dense, a bit austere on the palate, packed full of rough tannins. It is very characterful for a €10 wine. The wine is a regular in the lists of the best quality/price ratio wines in Spain despite the fact that the winery was just created in 2003.

Bodegas Vetus

With Vetus in DO Toro, the Antón family have now added a third emblematic winemaking region to their group of wineries. As well as Rioja Alavesa (Bodegas Izadi and Bodegas Orben) and Ribera del Duero (Finca Villacreces) they now produce wine in 10 hectares of old limited-production vines in Toro, praised as "the promised land of Spanish wines" by Robert Parker. Bodegas Vetus has worked hard to produce wines with the essence of Toro ever...
