Wine El Hombre Bala 2018

Bottle size and vintage
You are probably asking yourselves what ‘the human cannonball’ has got to do with wine. To tell you the truth, we are too. But once you have tried this wine, you won’t be in the least concerned about the label or its name. You’ll settle for it as it is: an elegant and profound, mountain Garnacha.
The Comando G team make it: people who know all about the Garnacha, especially Garnachas grown at high altitude, and who employ biodynamic farming, doing everything they can to understand nature and convey the landscape in every bottle, and to offer fresh and elegant wines.
This Hombre Bala appears a cherry colour, but not overly intense, not very dark, as is typical of the variety, and the tears fall slowly. The aromas of fairly ripe fresh fruit are intense, inviting, with notes of black pepper grains and woodland hints (of Mediterranean forests) endowing it with tremendous freshness, balsamic notes and a background of aromatic herbs and a slight lactic touch that bestow a very interesting air of rusticity, understanding by rusticity, purity and genuineness; this wine is most elegant.
The wine is made with grapes from old vineyards, grapevines that are by now very well-balanced and the feeling of harmony is perceptible at all times. Moreover, there is a lot of similarity between the aromas and flavours. The entry on the palate is a little astringent at the beginning (the wine is still very young), of average volume (these wine producers are not known for making highly extracted wines, but on the contrary, for light wines) yet with a sinewy and fruity mouthfeel, and with tannins evident although restrained. It is flavoursome, with a subtly bitter background and some smoky notes on the finish. It is a very good Garnacha in its price range, and a wine for both spring and autumn.

Despite being one of the entry wines by Comando G, this wine is of high quality although without the incredible complexity of its big brothers and sisters. Still, this is delightful, with smokey, almost funky touch on the nose and darker fruit on the palate than other top Gredos' Garnachas which tend to go for the red fruit spectrum. After all the rave reviews I'd read about this producer I suppose I was expecting more. A fresh, medium bodied interpretation of the grape, enjoyable in its simplicity, but nothing profound.by: Chris (01/09/2020) - Vintage 2016
