Review
The 'Appellation' wine range from Bodegas Catena Zapata faithfully replicates the concept of Burgundy's village wine. Just as happens in France, this wine collection has its main focus on the terroir, which means the region's origin becomes much more important than the grape variety or the ageing. The wines are named after historic vineyards, small in size, such as Lunlunta, Agrelo and La Consulta.
The vineyard from which this Catena La Consulta Malbec comes is located at an altitude of over one thousand metres, on clay soils covered with pebbles which bestow a strong personality on the wine. Back in the 1950s, Don Domingo Catena was already producing magnificent wines from the Malbec grapes of La Consulta whose lands enjoyed its intense sunshine and strong contrasts in day and night temperatures.
The ensuing wine gives off a strong sensation of varietal typicity cloaked in the sobriety and cool minerality endowed by the terroir. It opens up slowly, allowing a nose to emerge of ripe fruit (almost like liqueur) and cloves, whilst appearing a dark Picota cherry colour. Its nose is very fresh, balsamic and clearly brings to mind eucalyptus. It has an extremely elegant, refined and fresh passage, revealing concentrated, silky tannins; without any strident notes, but with complexity. The acidity of red berries on a mature background of cherries, vanilla and cocoa.

They have been able to make the most of terroir best described as poor, yet exceptional, holding to the firm belief that these particular lands possess hidden qualities, excellent for grape-growing. The wine-making philosophy of Nicolás Catena lies in the art of blending fruit from different vineyards. Despite the ...
