The wine

To talk about Trepat, the local grape variety from Conca de Barberà, we must talk about the Carles Andreu winery. Founded by Carles, following in the family’s winemaking traditions, this small winery in the village of Pira made a firm commitment to this undervalued variety, giving it the recognition which it deserved. Trepat does not make for wines with a strong alcohol content and it is difficult to extract colour from its skin, so it was normally used for sparkling and non-sparkling rosé wines. In fact, it used to be considered a productive variety incapable of creating quality and its skin was thought to be too dry to produce elegant wines. It was Carles Andreu who demonstrated that by regulating the plant’s yield and taking care with the maceration process, this subtle Catalan grape could produce great wines, including red ones. In fact, between 2004 and 2009, Carles Andreu was the only winery in Conca de Barberà making red wine with Trepat.

Carles Andreu Trepat is a fresh wine with a good degree of complexity, bringing out all the features of Trepat. Aromas of white pepper and wild fruit accompany a mouthfeel with fine tannins and a tantalizing red colour transparent enough for us to see through the glass. A short stay (6 months) in oak barrels is sufficient to round off the wine but without diminishing its delightful aromas of violets and cherries. Herbs like bay leaves and cloves also timidly appear to further strengthen the amazing sensation of woodland freshness which Carles Andreu Trepat transmits. A wine full of energy with a lively acidity and delicately bitter tannins perfectly integrated to ensure a result that flows elegantly and freely over the palate with no sign of heaviness. Every sip brings memories of dusty trails in a wine that constantly delights from start to finish like all great wines.

Cellers Carles Andreu started up in 1991, with Carles Andreu at the helm, who had continued the centuries-old family tradition and devoted himself to growing vines. The family presently owns around eighty hectares of vineyards in the Conca de Barberà region, distributed among the municipalities of Pira, Forès, Sarral, Solivella, Barberà de la Conca and Montblanc, where the area’s traditional varieties are mainly grown: Macabeo, Parellada and Trepat.
