The wine

Hacienda Solano Selección is a red wine blending the wonders of 30-year-old vines cultivated at altitudes using organic agriculture methods with a continental climate and respect for the fruit shown by the used barrels it ages in.

The vineyards belong to the Cubillo family, owners of the winery, and are located in La Aguilera in the Burgos region of Ribera del Duero where day/night temperature differences are even greater than in other parts of the appellation, leading to a slower ripening of the grapes and wonderfully balanced, complex and fresh wines. Another factor which adds elegance to the wine is thanks to the winery's idea of planting small quantities of local grapes, such as Albillo, alongside their old Tempranillo vines.

The minimal intervention work of oenologists Sophie Khün and Toni Sarrión (Bodega Mustiguillo) includes minimizing the use of sulphites and ageing the wine in used barrels to safeguard the essence of the fruit and avoid superfluous tannins. Hacienda Solano Selección is a wine that looks back to the traditions of previous generations, while facing the future with confidence.

What does this wine taste like?

It has a Picota cherry colour and aromas of cherries in liquor, fallen leaves and liquorice. It feels fresh in the mouth with a silky centre, mild tannins and measured acidity. Overall, it offers a sensation of gentleness; a delightfully pleasant wine. Its fine liqueur taste highlights a spicy and herbal character of cloves, white pepper and eucalyptus whereas hints of toffee in the background reveal a seductive and rounded wine with every sip you enjoy. Sand, potato peel, roots... a wild and elegantly rustic wine which transports the drinker to the landscape it was created in.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

The 2020 Selección comes from a cooler year with enough rain and no stress in the vineyards, when they achieved a medium-bodied red with 14% alcohol and pH of 3.88. It is harmonious, balanced and elegant, with a medium-bodied palate and a velvety mouthfeel through its fine tannins. It reminds me of the classical reds from the zone before excess arrived. Classical Ribera with character, rusticity and elegance. 34,570 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2021.

Hacienda Solano

Hacienda Solano is a small family-owned winery in La Aguilera, a historic village in Burgos and home to some of the best vineyards in the DO Ribera del Duero appellation. The winery's plots, some of which are a hundred years old, thrive in extreme climatic conditions at altitudes of around 1000 metres. The terrain plus the small size of the plots mean mechanized farming methods are out of the question. The oenologist Sophie Khün, from Alsace and with a long professional...
