Details for Pio Cesare Barolo 2016
Bottle size and vintage
The Pio Cesare cellar was founded in 1881 and today it is the only remaining one in Alba, the capital of the Langhe. In addition to this historical fact, and the figure of Pio Cesare himself, the winery is famous for being one of the first, in the second half of the nineteenth century, to believe in the great potential of Langaroli, Barolo and Babaresco wines at the top of the list.
Pio Cesare's Barolo is a classic product with an indefinable essence of modernity: as per tradition, it all stems from the grapes coming from the plots of Serralunga d'Alba, Grinzane Cavour, La Morra, Barolo, Novello, Castiglione Falletto and Monforte. The wine, after a traditional long fermentation, matures for over three years both in French oak barriques and larger capacity barrels, ideally combining tradition and innovation.
The result is a balanced wine, characterised by firm but measured tannins, a frank and ready interpretation of this extraordinary Nebbiolo. On the nose it successfully achieves harmony between sweet notes of dried plum and jams and fresher notes, including balsamic and liquorice, while the taste is clean, refined and persistent, approachable in youth but extraordinarily fulfilling.

Five star Barolo for me
"The name Barolo should not be downgraded by calling it 'regular', simply because there is no vineyard designation on the label.", says Pio Cesare at the backside of their bottles. And they are right. It's not about what comes after the word Barolo, it's about what's in front of it: Pio Cesare in this case. Five star Barolo for me.by: Italvinus Customer (15/10/2017) - Vintage 2013
Fine tannins and acidity combined with pleasant fruit. Complex taste that evolves with each sip. Drinks well now but needs some time to open up. Would like to drink whole stash away now but this will keep improving for years and lasts for decades if properly stored.by: Lawyer4corporates (06/10/2017) - Vintage 2013
Had it in Ischia . Thought outstanding there so tried a case of 6 . Not quite as good as I remember
Active for five generations, Pio Cesare is one of the most historic wineries in Alba and the entire Langhe area. Built along the Roman walls of ancient Alba, the winery has been active since 1881. The team, today decidedly modernized but still managed by the family, takes care of 70 hectares of vineyards, located in the Barolo and Barbaresco area. The range, based on a recognizable and traditional style, with touches of modernity which is fare from radical, provides wine love...
