The wine

Cigales has for too long been considered a region only capable of producing good rosé wines despite attempts to attract attention to its splendid red wines. One of the problems is that the region lies in the shadow of its all powerful neighbour, the DO Ribera del Duero appellation. Having said that, estate winemaking at the level of La Escuadra paints a promising future for the area and its red wines.

It is a fresh and mineral single-variety Grenache, with a rounded aromatic side to it. Despite its strength of 14%, it has an ethereal sensation on the palate, filling the mouth with lively fruit. Smoky hints in the background tell us of its time spent ageing in wood, while the non-stop delights enjoyed by our taste buds confirm that its fruit was harvested at just the right moment.

The whole region of Castile and León should be proud that such balanced wines are being produced here at incredible prices. Its wonderful Picota cherry colour and pure aromas are clues enough to indicate its quality, but tasting it will leave no doubts. Its delights include chocolate and pipe tobacco over fruity layers of blackberries, wild strawberries, redcurrants, and black plums. A wide drink in the mouth with well-integrated tannins and hints of black liquorice, as well as the slightly acidic taste so characteristic of Grenache when it is grown in extreme continental climates. Spices such as recently-ground black pepper add aromas to a very moreish finish, encouraging us to take another sip while we start to slice up some cheese or cut a piece of cured ham.
