The wine

Made completely from Grenache, Botijo Rojo is vinified and aged in an old cave in the village of Alpartir. It ferments in stainless steel before ageing in concrete tanks for ten months. It is named after the traditional reddish earthenware pitcher that workers would use to quench their first while out working the land. And its production process transmits the same simple message, a pure Grenache with nothing added - a true expression of the fruit.

The typical red fruit and pepper aromas of Grenache blend in with mineral notes to make this a unique wine. Powerful, deep and balanced in the mouth, with well-integrated tannins. A firm yet elegant wine offering a clear image of its terroir, Botijo Rojo has a strong personality just waiting for you to discover.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker and Jancis Robinson

The pure Garnacha 2020 Botijo Rojo Garnacha was produced with grapes from dry-farmed and head-pruned vines in the village of Épila at 450 meters in altitude. The grapes were picked at 13.5% alcohol and fermented and matured in concrete with some 10% full clusters to produce a wine that is juicy, varietal and easy to drink. All these wines have a low pH (3.27 in this case) and are fresh and balanced. It's young and primary, with fruit-forward aromas and flavors but with depth and very good balance and freshness. Elegant and quite surprising for an entry level. 60,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2021.

Transparent crimson. Pretty gamey nose and a lovely fresh, sweet, rosy palate with real energy and spice on the end. There is such a price difference between this and El Jardín de las Iguales that is seems a bit difficult to understand. This wine is less pure on the nose but in terms of texture and structure they are remarkably similar. VGV - Very good value.

Bodegas Frontonio

Bodegas Frontonio is named after Saint Frontonio, patron saint of the north-eastern Spanish town of Epila. Legend says that after Saint Frontonio was beheaded by the Romans, his body was buried in a cemetery and his head cast into the River Ebro. Miraculously his head was found upstream on the bank of the River Jalon, close to where the Bodegas Frontonio winery is located. Exactly as they're presented, they're the wine of a particular land, the résumé of a landscape. A passion...
