Details for Mas Oller Pur 2018
Review
Mas Oller Pur is a red wine created from a blend of top-quality low-yield Syrah, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon grown by the winery in Empordà. A cold pre-fermentation maceration is carried out to ensure they obtain the best aromas and the intensity of the grape skins, before the wine undergoes a long fermentation at controlled temperatures in stainless steel tanks. The result is a deeply-coloured wine with perfectly balanced tannins.
The tanks are then gravity-drained to remove deposits and the wine left to age for three months in French oak. It is then bottled and laid down for a further year before going on sale. This careful process produces a well-balanced and precise wine; a pure wine (hence its name, Pur), just as Carlos Esteva the great winemaker behind Mas Oller and the prestigous Penedes wineryCan Ràfols dels Caus aims for.
An intense, Picota cherry-coloured wine with mature aromas of black fruit and spices over a balsamic background, it is juicy and flavoursome in the mouth with hints of smoke and wild scrubland. It fills the mouth without losing elegance or freshness as hints of wood from its ageing are barely noticeable. It delights with rounded tannins and a fine structure alongside the spicy density of Syrah and the tenderness of Grenache whereas Cabernet Sauvignon adds its aristocratic essence to the blend. A perfect balance between alcohol strength and acidity makes it perfect for pairing with a wide variety of food, such as meat dishes, cold meats, pulses and cheese.
