The wine

don’t know if you too have a fairly fixed idea of what an Alvarinho should be like: fresh, briny, direct, almost Atlantic. But sometimes all it takes is a shift — following the course of the Douro, gaining altitude, changing the soil — for everything to start taking on new nuances. Lagar de Proventus Alvarinho is born there, in the Upper Douro, and offers precisely that: another way of understanding the variety.

On the Alijó plateau, at 600 metres, on schist soils, the Alvarinho loses some of that sharp edge and gains something different: volume, texture, depth. It is less briny, less sharp, but broader, more enveloping. More wine. Behind it all is Tr3smano, the project by Fernando Remírez de Ganuza, Pedro Aibar and the Ruiz family, who are not seeking to replicate a familiar style here, but rather to let the terroir lead the way.

In the winery, the approach follows the same line: 80% in stainless steel and 20% in used oak, with 6 months’ ageing on the lees. Not to impose a style on the wine, but to shape it. And it shows. What could be a light, easy-drinking white here becomes more serious, more structured, with a rich texture and a crisp acidity that balances it all out.

In the glass, it appears slightly golden. On the nose, citrus, white flowers, orange blossom, all clean and well-defined. On the palate, the pace changes: there is body, there is length, there is a minerality that lengthens the finish and places it firmly in that drier, rockier, more Douro landscape. It is not the Alvarinho you expect, but that is precisely why it makes sense.

It works well as an aperitif, but above all with a meal: seafood, fish, rice dishes, mild cheeses… or simply when the conversation drags on and the wine accompanies it unhurriedly. Because here it’s not about making a quick impact, but about lingering a little longer.

A different Alvarinho. Fuller, more textured, more Douro.

Lagar Tr3smano

Lagar Tr3smano

Tr3smano makes permanent reference to the initial number of dreamers who gave birth to this wine: three. The Ruiz-Gómez family, Fernando Remírez de Ganuza and Pedro Aibar are the creators of this project. It also seeks to recall the old Castilian expression ‘trasmano’ or ‘desmano’ to identify that which is not within reach but a little further back, that which is out of the way. Everything that is not easy to find and obtain. Tr3smano, in short, unites the origin where the...
