The wine

The Il Poggione company was among the first to market Brunello di Montalcino, since the early 1900s it has been one of the founding members of the Brunello di Montalcino Consortium. The main philosophy of the company is to have a great care for the vineyards, since the secret to produce great red wines lies precisely in the careful work in the vineyard. Brunello is the prince of Montalcino wines. It is produced exclusively with Sangiovese grapes from the oldest vineyards of the company. The harvest on the Franceschi estate has always been manual; fermentation is done in steel and aged in large oak barrels for 36 months. Subsequently, the wine spends a period of aging in the bottle, which is essential to guarantee the pleasantness and complexity that have made Brunello di Montalcino famous throughout the world. Il Poggione shows off a wonderful Brunello, with a magnificent classic imprint: a masterpiece to be enjoyed, which represents a certainty of the territory and that never disappoints.

It has a dark and intense ruby red color. A great olfactory impact for this Brunello which generously dispenses notes of small ripe fruits, leather, tobacco, aromatic herbs and very fine spiciness. The taste is really pleasant: velvet tannins caress the palate; we find balance and taste-olfactory correspondence of great consistency. An excellent glass now, an exceptional bottle in a few years. Excellent in combination with sumptuous meat and game dishes; also ideal with aged cheeses.

What does this wine taste like?

An extremely elegant Brunello that will enchant us with its fragrance, balance and velvety texture. A wine that exhibits ripe fruit on the nose, leathery and tobacco notes, aromatic herbs and fine spices, and which caresses the palate and our senses. A wine with great balance, consistent on the nose and palate.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker, Jancis Robinson, and Suckling

The Il Poggione 2016 Brunello di Montalcino opens to a medium dark appearance with pretty Sangiovese shine and a little ruby sparkle. This vintage shows a slightly untamed or wild side with a dense and heavier fruit profile. The focus here is on blackberry, dried cherry, tobacco and even a touch of smoky tobacco or horse saddle. The wine shows the firm grip and tannic backbone that is a common trait in this vintage, especially with the vineyards on this southern, sunlit side of the appellation. I also get a considerable flash of acidity on the close, almost too much, that certainly needs a few more years to soften. You really need to wait with this one. Production is an ample 200,000 bottles.

Lustrous ruby. Savoury, meaty and brooding. Still quite closed. With aeration stony minerally notes emerge. Bags of sour-cherry and raspberry fruit in perfect balance with the finely chiselled tannins. Mouth-watering, long and focused.

— Walter Speller (30/03/2021) Vintage 2016 - 18 JANCIS ROBINSON

A red with blackberry, cherry, some walnut and chocolate, as well as mahogany. Tea, too. It’s full-bodied and firm-tannined with beautiful length and depth. Linear and very fine. Drink after 2024.

Wine making

The 2015 vintage was one of the most standard in history in Montalcino. A classic, excellent vintage, which led the grapes to perfect ripeness. And that has produced total harmony between acidity, which is solid and spicy, and full-body , thanks to the climatic constancy of the season. Poggione 2015 is therefore at the same time a more majestic and more cross-section Brunello. The aristocratic and long-lived class of Sangiovese combines beautifully with an enveloping structure that makes this bottle ready to be drunk immediately.

Tenuta Il Poggione

Tenuta Il Poggione, now one of the largest wineries in the Montalcino municipality, extends over nearly 600 hectares divided into vineyards (125 ha), olive groves (70 ha), and other agricultural lands and forests. The winery is founded on the care and special attention dedicated to producing fine red wines, but also on being engaged in diversified and environmentally friendly agriculture, in which the vineyard alternates with other crops, and where wild animals are allowed...
