Wine-Growing Regions

Spain, France and Italy lead our white wine selection. Spain's Rías Baixas produces some of the world's best Albariño, fresh and saline; Rueda is the home of Verdejo, crisp and aromatic. In France, Chardonnay from Burgundy and Riesling from Alsace remain benchmarks; in Italy, Pinot Grigio and Vermentino offer lighter, easy-drinking styles.

New World regions such as California, Australia and New Zealand also produce excellent whites, but our catalogue is built around the depth and diversity of these three countries.

A white wine's character depends heavily on climate: wines from warmer regions tend to be fuller-bodied with riper fruit, while those from cooler regions are fresher and more aromatic.

White wine grape varieties

Some of the world's most popular white grape varieties are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chenin Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Muscat, Pinot Gris and Viognier. Beyond these, look out for Garnacha Blanca (White Grenache), Grüner Veltliner and Sémillon — grapes with real character once you know what to look for.

In our catalogue, Albariño and Verdejo take centre stage: Spain's signature whites, from crisp, citrusy young wines to richer, barrel-aged styles with real ageing potential.

FAQs

Where does white wine come from?

White wine is produced all over the world, but the regions with the longest tradition are in Europe: Burgundy and Alsace in France, Rías Baixas and Rueda in Spain, and the Veneto and Friuli in Italy. At Vinissimus, our white wine range focuses on these three countries, where centuries of winemaking have shaped grapes such as Albariño, Verdejo, Chardonnay, and Riesling into some of the most distinctive whites in the world.

What is white wine made of?

White wine is made from grape juice fermented without the skins. After the grapes are pressed, the must is separated from the skins and pulp almost immediately, so the wine stays pale and develops little tannin. This is what gives white wine its lighter, fresher character compared to red.

Is white wine made from white grapes?

Usually, yes — white grape varieties such as Albariño, Verdejo, Chardonnay or Riesling are the most common base. However, white wine can also be made from red grapes, as long as the skins are removed quickly during pressing so they don't release their colour into the juice. This technique is used for some Champagne and other sparkling wines made from Pinot Noir.

What is the alcohol content of white wine?

Most white wines have an alcohol content between 11% and 13.5% ABV, though this varies by style and region. Lighter, cooler-climate whites like Albariño or Riesling tend to sit at the lower end, while fuller-bodied, warmer-climate whites can reach 14% or more. The exact ABV is always shown on each product page.
