The wine

Telmo Rodríguez was one of the pioneers in the discovery of Garnachas from the Sierra de Gredos, an area which gives rise to delicious wines, so different from one another, depending upon the orientation and especially the soil composition.

The Pegaso line enables us to enjoy two very distinct wines: Pegaso Barrancos de Pizarra, a particularly mineral Garnacha, with earthy and pencil lead notes, and exhibiting plenty of ripe fruit and aromas redolent of the countryside and aromatic plants... and Pegaso Granito, with another sort of minerality, more balsamic and distinctly floral. Two honest wines, two wines which allow us to recognise the richness of the Garnacha, the potential of this area close to Madrid, and some very fine work indeed.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker and Parker

There is a lot of finesse in the 2020 Pegaso Barrancos de Pizarra, with a fine texture and almost powdery, elegant tannins, and it transmits a sensation of harmony. It's perfumed and floral and has more red than black fruit. It's medium to full-bodied, precise, clean, tasty and long. It's ripe, but the alcohol (15%) is completely unnoticeable. In fact, it feels less ripe than the Granito from 2020 that I tasted next to it. 4,104 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2022.

The 2021 Pegaso Barrancos de Pizarra comes from the vines on the mid slope and has a very elegant, fragrant nose with notes of concentrated violet and a solid palate. The slate tannins give a talcum powder texture, and the wine opens up in the mid-palate, making it very expansive. In the long term, it seems like the slate gives a better palate and the granite is more nose. Given the longer cycle and slow ripeness of the grapes, the wine has contained ripeness and 14.5% alcohol and is more polished and with integrated acidity. This has the combination of the cooler year and the resilience of the slate soils, coming through as complex and elegant, powerful and concentrated but with an ethereal side to it too. Bravo! 5,815 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2023 after it matured in 500- and 600-liter barrels for two winters.

Compañía de Vinos de Telmo Rodríguez

Telmo Rodríguez and Pablo Eguzkiza started work on their wine project in 1994 with, as they admit, few resources but plenty of ideas. The firm they set up, Compañía de Vinos de Telmo Rodríguez, has grown based on the pair's travels around winemaking regions to understand and experience Spain as a complex and unique winemaking country with incredibly diverse and rich landscapes.   Top quality winemaking traditions, experience in...
