Passorosso starts out life on Etna, at an altitude ranging between 500 and 1,100 metres above sea level. It comes from vineyards that are nearly a hundred years old and planted with the Nerello Mascalese variety. On the Sicilian wine-producing scene, Etna is a unique and beautiful region which not only offers a landscape that is both surreal and stunning, but also wines with an elegance, finesse and minerality that prove difficult to find in other reds produced on the island. In addition, there's a special concentration of primary aromas in the wines resulting from the big difference in day and night temperatures.

Passorosso, which is the Passopisciaro's entry wine, is obtained from Nerello Mascalese grapes originating from various locations within the Etna Cru. Appearing a magnificent and bright ruby colour, in the glass it emanates enticing fruit and spicy aromas, red fruits, violets, pepper and aromatic herbs, that work wonderfully well with the delightful minerality. On the palate, its freshness and crisp texture precede red fruits that seem chewy, particularly red currant and cherry. Tannins are present on a palate that flows smoothly, cleanly and easily, and ends with a long finish exhibiting pleasant mineral hints.

Too young but still very good

I like these wines so much, that even knowing they need time I keep opening before I should. This time the alcohol wasn't yet integrated, despite not being particularly high (14%). It was delicious, but not very forthcoming. Although better the second day, it was still austere and ungiving. I would love it if the producer could release his wine a couple of years later than he does now, but nowadays business comes always first.

    Very solid entry level Etna

Lovely aromas of red fruit and spices. Comes from old vines. Still a bit young, grippy, with high acidity. Drink or hold for another 2-3 years. Great value for the price.

    Nerello Mascalese goloso y fresco.

Nerello Mascalese fino, intenso y brillante.

So macht Italien Spaß.

The restoration of an ancient fortified courtyard in Passopisciaro, a hamlet of Castiglione di Sicilia on the slopes of the Etna, which has become legendary among enthusiasts, was the setting, in 2000, of the birth of Andrea Franchetti's adventure in the world of winemaking. The restoration of the historic terraces on the characteristic high lava highlands, blessed by a unique climate of exceptional temperature fluctuations and extraordinarily elegant vineyards, was the prelu...
