The wine

The new project from the Osborne family and their Compañía de Viñedos Iberian firm is rooted in the centre of the El Bierzo region. Here they work together with one of the most well-known wineries in this appellation, that of the Luna Beberide family. It is in their cellars where the Compañía de Viñedos Iberian produces and ages Lomopardo, a single-variety Mencia wine sourced from the Pago de Valdetruchas estate, which is also run by the Luna Beberides.

Mencia is the quintessential variety from El Bierzo, and the vines used to produce Lomopardo are over 40 years old and planted on terraces in clay, stone, and slate soils. This wine reflects the long-standing winemaking tradition of this appellation and the unique characteristics of its mountainous soils and climate, as influenced by the Cantabrian and Montes de León mountain ranges. Lomopardo offers a wonderful coupage of mountainsides and slate soils.

The grapes undergo an alcoholic fermentation with their skins for between 18 and 25 days depending on the characteristics of each year's harvest, and a malolactic fermentation in new second-year French oak barrels. Finally, the wine is left to age for six months in new second-year barrels.

Ripe fruits of the forest stand out in the resulting wine with hints of spice and toast thanks to its time in wood, alongside mineral, balsamic, and earthy aromas. Wide and fruity in the mouth, the Lomopardo is a fresh and pleasant wine with an optimum degree of acidity. The typical intensity and elegance of the Mencia grape makes this an excellent wine.
