Review
The Tenuta Donna Olimpia 1898 is a 60-hectare property in the territory of Bolgheri, where 45 hectares of new vineyards have been planted. The vines planted are obviously those whose vocation has been amply demonstrated: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah and Petit Verdot. For white wines, Vermentino, Viognier and Petit Manseng.
The Estate boasts a modern 5000 sqm cellar, designed with a view to high energy saving and minimum environmental impact, to limit waste and harmful emissions in the area. The ageing in wood takes place in French oak barriques. The barrique cellar is certainly the most important and fascinating environment of the whole estate.
The Bolgheri rosso by Donna Olimpia 1898 is one of the best value for money buys in the area. A precise blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, petit verdot and cabernet franc, it rests in barrique for 14 months and 6 months in bottle before adorning our tables. Intense ruby garnet with persistent violet reflections, intriguing on the nose with an intense and elegant bouquet of small red fruits, blueberry, pepper, chocolate and liquorice. Over time, it expresses darker and more evolved hints of leather, laurel, roasting and black cherry in alcohol.
The taste, however, is surprising for the brio, the freshness and the harmony between the strong ferrous minerality and the softness that entices the drinker. Perfect balance, and a harmonious tannin and a very persistent finish. There is everything for a pairing of class and thickness, both with important first courses such as meat tortelli with butter and sage, and with second courses typical of the Tuscan tradition.
