Review

Sandy soils, pebbles and ungrafted grapevines (pre-phylloxera) … that is what Toro is like; a region of wine production dating back to ancient times and poor quality lands, a neighbour of the Ribera del Duero. Today there are many producers who are taking a keen interest in this region, but in 1998 the Telmo Rodríguez Company was one of the first to launch an original Toro wine, his Dehesa Gago, produced from vineyards rented out to vine growers with whom he would maintain a close relationship.

Emblematic and highly renowned wineries such as Vega Sicilia, Mauro and Lurton own a second estate nowadays in Toro, where they make great wines - full-bodied and dense wines.

Recently released Dehesa Gago appears a lovely rich purplish colour, while on the nose it proves delightful, revealing delicious black berry fruits. This is a wine that has had no contact with oak and satisfies the palate with its juicy, thoroughly enjoyable and, needless to say, overwhelmingly fresh touch. A fantastic example of a Toro wine with fruit and power in abundance, but not forgetting that dynamic Atlantic aspect. The slightly rough edges we might find when it is first released are due to recent bottling. It will always benefit from a little time and some aeration.

  • Optimum serving temperature:Between 12ºC and 14ºC

A lovely wine from Toro

This a fine example of Toro's prime grape (Tinta de Toro). Lots of red fruit and medium bodied. A great wine for any lamb dishes or Sunday roasts. Lovely everyday wine.

Amazing value

Black cherry, blackcurrant and slightly minerally in the nose. Mid-full bodied, good finish. Vintage '16 seems a little bit young right now (Oct 2018), benefits from some hours of breathing. Overall really good value for price.

A strong tradition of vine-growing, formal training in Bordeaux and great passion for wine might broadly define this “company” set up by Telmo Rodríguez (with experience, apart from in several Bordeaux châteaux, in the family-owned winery at Remelluri) and Pablo Eguzkiza (a pupil of Jean Claude Berrouet, at such famous wineries as Petrus, and with experience in La Rioja at Barón de Oña and at Remelluri too). Their joint objective is to work with vineyards in a variety of regi...
