This is the family-owned winery of Miguel Sánchez, who, after years spent in the distribution of top quality wines, decided to create his own wines as a result of purchasing some 15 ha of vineyards in the Atauta Valley in the province of Soria, this DO’s most easterly region. The terroir is particularly complex, with plantations of tried and tested, gnarled vines aged between 60 and 160 years old, spread out in micro-parcels.
Dominio de Atauta make some Riberas with a very distinctive character, from pre-phylloxera vines, using biodynamic methods and parcel selections (they work with numerous tiny plots) in an incredibly harsh environment. A landscape which must have been magnificent in the past but nowadays suffers from sad neglect.
In their opinion, a wine's personality lies firmly in "the soil, the microclimate, the variety and a specific way of doing things".
