Orange Wine
Orange wine is a white wine made like a red: the juice ferments in contact with the grape skins, which gives it that amber colour and a bolder, more textured character than a typical white. This is a small, specialist selection — sourced from Spain, Italy, France, Georgia and Slovenia, the regions with the longest history of making wine this way. Stock moves quickly, so if something catches your eye, it's worth ordering sooner rather than later. Want to understand the style before you buy? Read our guide on what orange wine is and how it's made.
What is orange wine?
Orange wine is made from white grapes, but vinified like a red: the skins stay in contact with the juice during fermentation, sometimes for days, sometimes for months. This is what gives the wine its amber-to-orange colour, along with more tannin and texture than a typical white.
The style isn't new — it's how white wine was traditionally made in Georgia for thousands of years, using clay vessels called qvevri. It was revived in the early 2000s by producers in Friuli, Italy, and has since spread to small producers across Spain, France and Slovenia.
What does orange wine taste like?
Expect more structure and grip than a standard white, often with notes of dried fruit, nuts, and sometimes a slightly oxidative, sherry-like edge. Tannin levels vary a lot by producer — some orange wines are light and easy-drinking, others are intensely savoury and built for food.
What food pairs well with orange wine?
Orange wine's texture and tannin make it more versatile with food than most whites. It works well with dishes that are usually tricky to match: aged cheese, mushroom-based dishes, cured meats, and spiced or fermented foods like kimchi. Its savoury character also makes it a strong match for Spanish tapas and Italian antipasti.
