Bodega Marañones

Bodega Marañones is situated in San Martín de Valdeiglesias, around 70 kilometres west of Madrid. The village is one of the three sub-zones of the DO Vinos de Madrid and lies at the foot of the Sierra de Gredos, on the border with Ávila and Toledo.
The winery was founded in 2008 by the lawyer and entrepreneur José Fernando Cornejo. Since 2021, it has been part of the Alma Carraovejas group.
The oenologist Fernando García Alonso, co-founder of the Comando G project, is responsible for the wines. He is supported by Alvar de Dios. Together, they have made Marañones one of the leading producers of Garnacha from Gredos.

Vineyards

The winery cultivates around 20 hectares of its own vineyards at altitudes ranging from 650 to 900 metres. The vines are between 30 and 70 years old, trained as bush vines and grown without irrigation.
The soils consist of weathered granite with a sandy texture. The estate features the three typical types of granite found in the region: white, brown and pink granite. These impart the wines’ minerality.
Many of the vineyard plots face north. The mountain climate and the significant temperature differences between day and night ensure slow ripening and freshness.

The wines

Garnacha takes centre stage, complemented by local varieties such as Albillo Real and Morenillo. The aim is to produce fresh, elegant wines that reflect the terroir and the vintage. The wines are clearly classified by origin. The Treinta Mil Maravedíes is the local wine, made from different plots in the vicinity of San Martín. The Marañones comes from the plot of the same name, with vines aged between 50 and 70 years. At the top end of the range is the Peña Caballera, a single-vineyard wine made from Grenache grown on 1.5 hectares at an altitude of 850 metres. Robert Parker regularly awards the estate’s wines between 92 and 96 points.
