The wine

The Ponce PF Pie Franco is a wine that has provided its producer, Juan Antonio Ponce, a winemaker admired for his extremely strong links to Manchuela, with the greatest satisfaction of all his wines. Ponce is often called "the Bobal magician" thanks to his achievements with, and his love for, this variety. He learned his winemaking arts with Cía. de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez, acquiring knowledge and working experience with different appellations and their diverse soils and climates. At the age of just 24 he then decided to start his own project in his home town of Iniesta (La Manchuela-Cuenca), aiming to bring with him the proud traditions and ideas of the 'cosecheros' (winegrowers) production model he'd seen in Rioja Alavesa.

The Bodegas y Viñedo Ponce winery boasts seventeen hectares of family-owned vineyards, though they work with around forty hectares all together. The vines grow in clay soil with a limestone base formed by the sediments of the rivers Júcar and Cabriel. The climate here in the Manchuela appellation is continental with a Mediterranean influence as the region is near the eastern coast of Spain. This, alongside biodynamic growing methods, and limited production, guarantees the personality and spectacular quality of their wines.

Ponce manages each of his wines individually, paying attention to the vintage and the plot it comes from, both during the harvest and the subsequent ageing process. Freshness is a key factor for him with the Bobal grape, collecting the fruit days before neighbours do so as to avoid over-ripe jammy sensations in the wines.

The Ponce PF Pie Franco is a single-variety Bobal wine of which only 12,000 bottles are made. The vines were planted by Ponce's grandfather eighty years ago in deep sandy soils — free from phylloxera. It is fermented, with whole bunches and local yeasts, in oak vats and then matures for eleven months in 600-litre oak barrels which have previously been used three or four times. It has a bright Picota cherry colour, and a perfumed nose with black fruit, scrub, and balsamic hints. A structured but balanced wine, with plentiful sweet tannins and mineral notes of sand and rock.
