Méntrida

Located in the north of Toledo province and bordering with the community of Madrid, Méntrida is one of the historic wine-growing regions in Castile La Mancha figuring on the DO map of this community. Despite the fact that evidence now exists of vine cultivation back in medieval times, it was during the reign of the Austrian monarchs that the wines of Méntrida found great favour in Madrid. At the end of the 19th Century they gained various international awards.

In common with other areas of Spain, Méntrida could also be described as the land of the Garnacha, since more than 80% of its territory is planted with this variety which is giving wine producers such good results. These are meaty, warm, velvety smooth wines which, due to the incorporation over recent years of varieties such as Syrah, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon, have modernized the traditional image of rough wines, as an effort is being made to cater for tastes sought after by the consumer market.

Although the majority of the vineyards are found on the plains of the high plateau where the sedimentary terrains are a brownish-grey colour, the vines that yield the best quality grapes can be found to the west of the region in the Sierra de San Vicente. With its rugged relief and due to an altitude of 800m, the wines are fresher and more delicate. The region boasts a continental climate with low rainfall.
