Lake Bolsena, in the top part of Lazio north of Rome, is one of the most interesting and less known volcanic terroirs in Italy. The combination of lake and volcano, which is that magic ingredient in the wine districts of Umbria, here is still to be discovered. Andrea Occhipinti is on it, a refined and curious winegrower who has made the most of the main grape variety of the area: l'Aleatico.
Vinifications and ageing are conducted in steel, cement and amphora, while in the strictly organic vineyard reigns the Aleatico, a light and moderately aromatic red, excellent also as a raisin wine. Then there is some Greghetto, a red grape of Tuscan origin
Alter Alea, a version of Aleatico vinified in white, is aromatic, fresh and intense. Of beautiful acidity, vivid colour and intense perfume is the rosé Alea Rosa, also based on Aleatico, a grape that lends itself well to this congenial type. Harmonious, very easy to drink, intense, enveloping and mineral, the Alea Viva is the company's classic, the real reference point for dry Aleatico di Gradoli. Out of the box for class and structure, the Rosso Arcaico is the Aleatico that macerates one month in anfora and stays on its own lees for another three months.
