The wine

Fourcas Dupré always affords the opportunity of enjoying a good Bordeaux wine without having to spend a fortune on it. It has all we expect from a wine of this region, at a most reasonable price. It's serious and elegant, classic in style, traditional in its coupage, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon (44%) and Merlot (44%), with a little Cabernet Franc (10%) and Petit Verdot. In short, it's a wine to open, enjoy and come back for more.

The Listrac-Médoc appellation is very near to Saint-Julien, in the centre of the Gironde's left bank, and both share that balance between powerfulness and smoothness. Fourcas Dupré is almost certainly the winery which best represents this small appellation and its first wine, Château Fourcas Dupré is undoubtedly one of its finest ambassadors, if not the foremost.

Fourcas Dupré comes over as opulent and complete, yet with restraint and elegance, and doesn't aspire to impress, merely to please. It's neither very concentrated nor focused on one single aspect, offering a varied and variable aromatic palette, with ripe red fruit (raspberry and black cherry) aromas, leather and damp undergrowth notes, alternating too with smells of a drier nature, earthy notes, whiffs of tobacco, aromatic herbs, spices and having a balsamic undertone. On the palate, it's simply lovely, fruit-forward, flavoursome, very pleasurable, mineral, balanced, fresh, and with silky tannins. It's a well-nurtured, well-crafted wine which isn't aiming for power or volume but —we'd like to stress this— purely the pleasure of enjoying a good glass of wine. A harmonious, profound and precise wine, for pouring, sharing and looking forward to a second glass.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker, Jancis Robinson, and Suckling

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Fourcas-Dupre charges out of the gate with bold, expressive scents of baked blueberries, crushed black plums and cassis with hints of sandalwood, pencil shavings and menthol plus a waft of aniseed. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is charged with wonderful energy, featuring bright, black, crunchy fruit and a velvety texture, finishing with fantastic freshness. Nicely done!

Mid crimson, not as dark as many in 2018. Gentle, lightly spiced dark-red fruit, nicely stony. A little bit of oak sweetness on the palate but mainly a gentle, rounded wine that is really quite approachable (as long as you drank it with food) even though it’s so young. A lightness of touch and more obvious freshness than in many 2018s, perhaps because the other components are relatively restrained.

Fresh currants and berries on the nose with damp soil and some forest-floor character. It’s medium-bodied with soft, sleek tannins. Juicy and fresh. Try after 2022.
