Tannat

Tannat is one of the minor French red grape varieties. Its peculiar characteristics, high acidity and extremely pronounced tannin (to which it owes its name) have marginalised it from the French vineyard, except for a few remaining plots in the Southwest. Rarely vinified as a single variety, it is found today especially in the Madiran AOC, where it expresses a deep ruby colour, syrupy and concentrated notes of jammy fruit, blackberry, blueberry, cinnamon and clove. On the palate it is evidently tannic, despite the ageing to which it can be subjected. Today, it is domesticated to the point of making it at least partially elegant and juicy, even if the astringent approach is still characteristic and with difficulty is integrates with time. From its original habitat it has extended with some success in Uruguay, where it is considered the national red and is more often practiced as a single variety, while in Italy it is very uncommon and is being experimented in South Tyrol.
