According to some people it originated from Styria, according to others from the Rhine Valley, according to others from Transylvania (hence perhaps the name), sylvaner is indeed a Central European grape, but it has found its home and the best expressions in Alto Adige, and specifically in the Eisacktal. Outside Italy, it gives the best results in Alsace and Franconia, where it has been certified since the sixteenth century, and for years it was the most widespread German white grape, to the detriment of quality. In the Eisacktal it has always been the object of a specific enhancement. Here, in fact, on fresh but sunny slopes, it best develops its lively body and typical acidity. Its mineral notes and scents of apple, peach and mint are combined with aromas of herbs and notes of freshly mown hay. Thanks to this interesting composition sylvaner is considered to be a true ambassador of Alto Adige wines with an Alpine imprint, in short, an adoptive, but still native vine.
