Malvasia Istriana
Cultivated since the 4th century in Friuli, Collio, Carso and Venezia Giulia, malvasia istriana is one of the noblest and most austere expressions of the Malvasia group in Italy. An honest interpreter of the soils of this area, be they the ponca del Collio or the characteristic karst terrain of Venezia Giulia, malvasia Istrian generally expresses less aromaticity than the "sister" malvasias, and this trait gives the resulting wines a special note of class, elegance and straight-forwardness. Of an often straw-yellow colour, the bouquet evokes white peach and citrus fruits, but the profile soon reveals notes of aromatic and medicinal herbs, iodine, salt, minerals. On the palate it is striking for its sapidity and freshness, thanks to the ageing potential of the most sought-after versions, and closes with refined hints of sage, citrus, dried fruit.
