Gamay
Native to Burgundy, gamay is the famous grape for Beaujolais nouveau, the most famous new wine in the world. By its very nature it tends to be vinous, fruity, lively, crunchy and graceful, of immediate and fragrant drinkability. However, it is precisely in Burgundy that it can take on other profiles, even giving reds that do not disdain ageing. In Italy it is present in some regions, such as Valle d'Aosta and Tuscany, where it is generally vinified as an easy-drinking red, with no pretensions to ageing. The Umbrian gamay, from the area of Lake Trasimeno, deserves a special mention. Despite its name, it is actually a grenache: vinified also as a single variety, the gamay of the Colli del Trasimeno DOC is usually a light and gently structured grenache, with little tannin and good freshness, excellent for lake fish.
