Gaglioppo is the most significant and typical red grape of Calabria. A rather rustic grape variety, difficult, even if vigorous and of good productivity. It is widespread throughout the region and recent studies have identified it as belonging to the same family as the Sicilian frappato. And yet, until a few years ago, in Calabria it was hardly distinguishable from the other typical red wine of the territory, the magliocco. Despite the fact that for too long it was vinified with long macerations and full-bodied extract, like frappato il gaglioppo, it gives wines that are potentially elegant and subtle, mineral and iodised, and suitable for ageing, thanks also to its proximity to the sea. Ruby with garnet nuances, the bouquet has notes of plum, fruit jam, spices and animal scents, while on the palate, although full-bodied, is elegant and has good tannin. It also expresses itself in an excellent way as a rosé and as a red for ageing in wood.
