El Enemigo Chardonnay 2016
Front and back

Review:

Argentina has spent years, through its own hard work, gaining a huge reputation on the international wine scene. The Malbec grape, forgotten in virtually every other corner of the world (with the exception of Cahors), has catapulted Argentinian reds into standards of the highest quality. However, broadly speaking, we could say that its white wines are less well-known, excepting perhaps the aromatic Torrontés.

The wine under our consideration here shows that Argentina isn't only a land of reds, and many other grapes can produce splendid wines at these latitudes. El Enemigo Chardonnay is an amazing wine, which will delight both experts and neophytes. It combines the Chardonnay grape's best attributes, French barrels and biological ageing masterfully, taking Mendoza white wine to a level of complexity hitherto unimagined until recently.

Obtained from vines planted at an altitude of 1,500 metres on the calcareous soils of Tupungato, El Enemigo Chardonnay ferments with wild yeasts and rests in barrels, under a cap of flor yeast in some of them, evolving and transforming at ease. It smells of dried fruits and nuts (hazelnuts and almond skin) and crystallized fruit. On the palate, the salinity of the biological ageing comes through subtly on a base of candied citrus fruits and the odd shy tropical hint. Lactic and toasty notes envelop an elegant, full and atypical wine which deserves a thorough tasting, perhaps with a sole meunière or a good creamy goat's or sheep's cheese.

Food Pairing:
Sole a la meuniere / sheep cheese / goat's cheese
Recommendations:
Optimum serving temperature:
Between 6ºC and 8ºC
