The wine

When we tasted this wine for the first time, we were impressed by its menthol notes, its juiciness and its maturity, and how appealing it was, so demanding of a second glass. It came over as a wine of primary aromas, typical of a Toro, with raspberries and blackberries, and an interesting balance between the sweetness of the fruit and the temperance provided by the notes of dried spices.

Fruitiness and lushness alternated with seriousness, with a dash of astringency on the finish even, but no cause for concern. Fresh and dry once in the glass, on swirling, its fruit-forward character came alive, its sweetness and the gentle menthol notes reappeared. This is apparently a restrained and rigorous wine that cannot conceal its sweet inner self.

Colour? Dark Picota cherry, fairly deep. Notes on the nose? Jammy fruit, dried spices, liquorice, a bit of toast and menthol. Palate? Fruity, warm, intense, powerful, lively. Well-made, seeking elegance rather than opulence, as befits the house’s brand name: Matarromera.

The project has become a true wine empire since then, and now includes brands such as: Bodegas Emina,...
