The wine

The Château Pape Clément Blanc is a Bordeaux white that is especially well-liked by all those who try it. If the Pape Clément red is a constant, always a sure winner, the white is an absolute delight.

After a gentle pressing, the must of the best Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc (primarily) grapes flows by means of gravity through to French oak barrels in which it will ferment and undergo the efforts of battonage. Subsequent ageing takes place, almost entirely, in oak, although a small amount of the wine matures in egg-shaped concrete tanks.

It's a white appearing an intense golden colour with greenish glints, and displays at first a shy nose which soon becomes expressive and reveals citrus hints, with apple and honeysuckle. The oak is discerned but discretely, having subtle vanilla and toasty notes. Some cool spices come through on a full, round palate, with rounded tannins and an intense minerality which stays smooth thanks to a lime acidity. A saline finish.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker, Jancis Robinson, and Suckling

The Pape Clement 2017 Blanc (composed of 55% Sauvignon Blanc and 45% Sémillon) has loads of exotic fruit—pineapple, green guava and passion fruit—with crushed stones, fragrant herbs and mandarin peel hints. The palate is medium-bodied, intense and racy with a long, pure, exotic fruit finish.

Tasted blind. Pale lemon colour. A bit cheesy on the nose. Very ripe, full and fleshy on the nose. Medium weight and medium intensity. Some lightly spicy oak but the perception on the palate is a little flat. Very spicy on the finish.

Aromas of pineapple, peaches and apple pie with stone. Deep and intense, yet always subtle in the nose. Full-bodied, layered and very flavorful. However, it stays focused and precise in the mouth and at the finish. Serious length. Still needs three or four years to come together. Better after 2022.

Château Pape Clément

Château Pape Clément is one of the famous, ancient Bordeaux vineyards. The earliest harvests date back to 1252, although it was Bertrand de Goth who really started proceedings at the château. After being appointed archbishop of Bordeaux in 1299 and receiving the vineyards of La Mothe in Pessac as a gift, he gradually enlarged the estate. When he was elected to succeed Pope Benedict XI in 1305, he chose to be called Clément V, which is the derivation of the château's name. Due...
