The wine

Deschants is definitely one of the brightest stars in the extensive Chapoutier range, offering consumers a spicy red that’s immediately attractive, but which also has the ability to become even better over several years, as shown by its fine grained tannins. It’s a wine which remains true to its roots, based mainly in granite, revealing itself to be firm, reserved and even a little austere.

What does this wine taste like?

It appears an intense shade of garnet-red and offers a very floral (violet) nose, which also releases whiffs of liquorice and spices. Cherries, black olives and aromas of crushed stone blend in with blackberry and blueberry jam and touches of ground pepper. As regards the palate, it’s supple on entry, medium-bodied, with smooth ripe tannins and a predominance of red fruits and fragrant herbs. Its finish is long and spicy.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

Blended from fruit taken from around Mauve and Sarras and aged in concrete, the 2019 Saint-Joseph Deschants offers up hints of crushed stone and ripe, plummy fruit underscored by a sense of granitic restraint. Atypically full-bodied and concentrated, it's rich, velvety and easy to drink yet should age well for up to a decade.

M. Chapoutier

The Maison Chapoutier lays claim to a family tradition which dates back to 1808, although it wasn't until Michel Chapoutier took control of the company in 1990 that its wines began to stand out, with a very extensive catalogue offering a variety of high quality products. Chapoutier is particularly well-known for its remarkable Hermitage wines; in this appellation, the Chapoutier maison owns its largest tract of wine-producing land, comprising 34 of the 115 hectares held...
