The wine

Casa Castillo Vino de Finca joined the mid-level range of Jumilla wines with the 2015 vintage, placing itself between the youngest single-variety wine and their estate wines. Most of its fruit comes from chiefly Monastrell (95%) vines which are over 30 years old. Partly destemmed bunches of grapes ferment with local yeast in concrete tanks underground and then age in 5000-litre oak barrels for a year.

It offers a strong and opaque red colour and is intense and expressive in the nose, blending aromas of wild fruit jams with hints of stone dust over a lactic background. In the mouth it is both pleasant and firm, with tannins which seem to float over a soft layer of fruit and delicate blue flowers. It is somewhat liqueur-like, spicy and elegantly herbal, but over time will find a definitive balance. Standing in the glass, aromas of cherries, Kuhri's blackberry liqueur, and liquorice appear and its spices become more noticeable. It has a bitter, fresh and lingering finish, producing all the complexity of a great wine and the textures of chalky soils for a very affordable price. A fact held out by its success: the first vintage sold out in just 2 months.
