Bassus Pinot Noir 2017
Front and back

Review:

Fragile, rather elusive and not always easy to cultivate, the Pinot Noir is a grape that requires very special climatic conditions before it's ready to express all its nobility. Burgundy's star variety can also adapt to more southerly latitudes and produces very good wines, with a distinctly Burgundy character, in high altitude parcels or vineyards lying in favourable locations. Presenting itself as a fine example, Bassus, one of the most famous and well-regarded wines produced from this variety in Spain and a very personal and successful interpretation made by Bodegas Hispano Suizas.

In El Póntón, close to Requena, enjoying a continental climate with Mediterranean influences and on clay-limestone soils, the Pinot Noir has enabled Bodegas Hispano Suizas to make a wine in line with the affordable but high quality profile that the winery adheres to. A singular and amazing wine in which the team, comprised of Marc Grin, Rafael Navarro and Pablo Ossorio, has succeeded in bringing out a special intensity and elegance thanks to its careful vinification. Very sensitive to heat, the Pinot Noir undergoes a meticulous selection process and is harvested in the early hours of the morning, and then remains in a chilled room for three days. After destalking, it's transferred into new American oak barrels by means of a refrigeration system which also allows cold maceration to take place for 4 days. Finally, after 15 days of fermentation and a light pressing of the grapes, the wine is left to age for a minimum of 10 months in new French oak barrels followed by minimum filtration before being bottled.

The result is a wine that appears a cherry-red colour with violet glints that reveals on the nose intense aromas of ripe red fruit (cherry, cassis), French oak, and liquorice. On the palate, its unctuous and enveloping entry gives way to a full and flavoursome wine, with a velvety mouthfeel, great elegance and refined tannicity. Its aromas of ripe red fruit and spicy hints are complemented by a toffee undertone, highlighting the overall complexity and ending with a long finish.

Full-bodied and fruity more similar to a bobal than a pinot noir. Excellent drinking with a good meal. Highly recommended.
