The wine

Opening a bottle of Fusco is like opening a window to enjoy the mountain views, feel the breeze on your face and breathe in fresh air. A wine of landscape and fruit, a simple yet unbeatable combination. Its author, the untiring and popular winemaker Xurxo Alba who runs the family winery, Bodegas Albamar, someone who decided to produce a red wine in a location away from the winery's usual home in Rias Baixas. Briefly, an honest, fresh, silky and pure wine with no wood.

What does this wine taste like?

A light and slightly spicey wine, full of character and boasting a well-defined personality. An unconventional but seductive wine, its shy presentation gives way to a fruity drink with a deliciously bitter farewell. Fusco is a gift for the tastebuds, and delights the nose with aromas of plum skins and orange peel before a saline minerality and fine hint of smoke mix with just the right amount of tannins.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

Mostly from the Chantada zone in Ribeira Sacra, the 2017 Fusco fermented destemmed in stainless steel and was bottled completely unoaked. It saw a maceration of 20 to 25 days and was bottled after it spent the winter in stainless steel. It's very pleasant, fresh and easy to drink, but it's not banal and is more about the granite soils than the variety—simple, transparent, straightforward. A degree more sophisticated and deep than the 2015. There are 13,000 bottles of this.

Winemaking

Xurxo Alba is rightly praised for carrying out a bare minimum of intervention in his winemaking processes, showing an utmost respect for the terroir and this is clearly seen in his wines. Harvested and destemmed, grapes are fermented with wild yeasts so the wine can then stand on its lees in stainless steel tanks for months. Xurxo uses his technical experience and know-how to control the wine throughout the process — a control carried out by accompanying the wine rather than by constant intervention.

Vineyards

Fusco is made with grapes from La Chantada, the coolest area in the Ribeira Sacra mountains. Although it is produced in inland Galicia, away from the sea, Fusco still holds onto Atlantic sensations and offers something of a marine freshness. Its vines are between 30 and 40 years old, planted on spectacular terraces to overcome the steep slopes of the hillsides.

Bodegas Albamar

The last economic crisis led to Xurxo Alba giving up his job as a consultant oenologist and devoting his work to his own vineyards and winery instead. White wines from Rías Baixas and Valdeorras and reds from Ribeira Sacra, Xurxo's wines always strongly express the character of their terroir. In the renowned area of Salnés, for example, he makes the most of the qualities of granite soils and the nearby sea to create fresh and lively wines. Wherever he works, Xurxo...
