Bullas

The town of Bullas, which gives its name to the appellation, has existed since Roman times and, after the reconquest, prospered along with the neighbouring villages, thanks to agriculture and wine production. 

However, it was not until the late 1980s that wineries began to abandon bulk wine production in order to invest in technology and start making quality wines. The Denomination of Origin was granted in 1994.

The appellation is situated between 400 and 810 metres above sea level and, due to its location between the Mediterranean and the inland sierras of Andalusia, has very hot summers, although the climate is generally cooler than in other Murcian appellations. 

Sudden icy winds from the mountains can bring frosts between October and April, and torrential rains and thunderstorms are not uncommon in September and October.

The terrain is of hilly typography with ascending altitude from south to north. This typography gives rise to small valleys with their own microclimates. The soils on the slopes are brown and so hard that they need to be mechanically opened before the vines can be planted. 

They are made up of brownish-limestone soils with a low organic matter content, good drainage and a high level of limestone, as well as alluvial soils.

As far as grape varieties are concerned, the DO admits up to 12, including Macabeo, Garnacha or Syrah, but, without a doubt, the star that shines most brightly in the region is Monastrell; according to the appellation's regulations, all red and rosé wines must contain at least 60 % of this variety. 

It produces wines with a high alcohol content, not very acidic, pleasantly tannic, intense colour and very aromatic, with good ageing potential.
