The wine

Malpaso is a distinguished and distinct wine. A wine which, poured into a glass, with medium density and a cherry colour, doesn't seem to presage the strong wine that's in store for us. However, before trying it out, let's first disclose some details about how it's made, always interesting, in order to get to know the philosophy that lies behind it.

Malpaso ferments with whole clusters and native yeasts in open oak casks, where the grapes are trodden by foot as in times gone by. It's a wine that's had the vines under prime consideration, with the intention being to show maximum respect to their fruit. The sandy soils of the vineyards, lying at an altitude of 400 metres, guarantee freshness, perfect maturity and elegance. The wine matures for a year in large-size (400 and 500-litre) French oak barrels, without their aromas being intrusive.

The wine. The first surprise is on the nose: it smells of elegance and complexity; black olives, orange peel, fresh fruit, chocolate, flowers and sand, and some touches of smoked bacon reminiscent of the Rhône. A cool, fresh palate, having a very fine mouthfeel, but with a characterful undertone and clear-cut aromas of stout. Lovely Garnacha-type hints appear in this profound and balsamic wine, a different wine, with a long and far from simple finish. We'll say it again: a distinguished and distinct wine.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker and Jancis Robinson

Pure Syrah from vines in Méntrida, the 2017 Malpaso fermented with full clusters in open 1,500- and 5,000-liter oak vats and matured in barrels of different sizes for around one year. It has an explosive nose with notes of black olives, smoked bacon, violets and an herbal twist. It doesn't show the heat of the vintage and instead comes through as fresh, expressive and vibrant; it's medium-bodied with vibrant acidity and is very easy to drink. It seems like the way they work—picking the grapes early to avoid too much ripeness, fermenting with stems in a non-extractive way and aging the wines in larger barrels to avoid notes of wood—works well with the variety. 21,500 bottles produced. It was bottled in October 2018.

Tasted blind. The wine displays a generous oak charge and shows mint, black pepper, smoke and toast. It is consistent and rounded with superbly ripe black fruit. Appropriate intensity and really tightly textured, still to mellow. It has a leathery touch that I did not detect in previous vintages. It displays lots of black fruits, a meaty character and black olives at the back palate. It is a remarkable vintage, but more power than in previous years.

Canopy

Bodegas Canopy is a project which brings together Belarmino Fernández, Jordi Vidal and Alfonso Chacón, three winemaker friends, professionals in the world of wine, business and catering, who decided one day to put their efforts and passion into a wine-growing venture which would enable them to rediscover the historic terrain of the Méntrida denomination, an area that did not enjoy a very good reputation, specialising as it had done for ages in producing bulk wine and with very...
