The wine

The Cune Imperial Gran Reserva is one of Spain's great reds, an important classic.

Obtained from CVNE's best old vineyards are grapes of exceptional quality, whose must, after cold maceration and fermentation in French oak, becomes the wine that ages for 36 months in barrels. It will subsequently rest for a further 48 months in bottle before being released onto the market.

It appears an amazing bright picota cherry colour and its nose is most appealing, with ripe fruit, liquorice, intense spices and balsamic touches. On the palate it's silky, with finely-drawn tannins hinting at caramel and cocoa. The perfectly integrated oak ensures an elegant, very balanced composition, with a dry finish, a wine which offers numerous pairing possibilities.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

The classical 2016 Imperial Gran Reserva was produced with a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo from grapes that were picked between October 10 and 25 with good ripeness, delivering a wine with 14.5% alcohol after fermenting in small oak vats followed by malolactic in concrete and two years in barrel and three in bottle. I was quite surprised, because the wine was quite closed and needed energetic swirling and time in the glass to reveal its true colors. It has more stuffing and finesse than the reserva. 2016 was a very good vintage, with freshness and balance to develop nicely in bottle. The tannins are very fine, and the wine is tasty and long. 50,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2019.

Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España - CVNE

The Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España, CVNE —or 'Cune', as it's known locally in Haro— was founded in 1879 and was one of the first wineries in La Rioja to bottle wine. What started out as the project of two brothers (Raimundo and Eusebio Real de Asúa) continues today in the hands of the same family (now the fifth generation) and comprises four wineries: CVNE, Imperial (an independent winery within the original CVNE winery), Viña Real and Viñedos del Contino....
